4 Morning Routines That Will Increase Your Productivity

Do morning routines really matter?

The way you start your morning can (and usually does) affect your entire day. We’ve all had days of waking up on the wrong side of the bed, or feeling frazzled by yesterday’s unsolved problems, or just feeling plain old tired.  If you want to get the most out of your workday, putting a morning routine in place is a great place to start. We’re going to share some of our favorite morning routines that will increase your productivity throughout the day.

1) Go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier

Waking up early is a great way to get a jump-start on your day. Many of the most successful people in the world have a habit of waking up early, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and Michelle Obama. An early wake time gives you the chance to have some quiet time, get a workout in, eat breakfast with your family, or get a head start on your day.

Of course, it’s very important to also ensure that you are getting sufficient sleep. In order to wake early, you may need to set an earlier bedtime. Insufficient sleep weakens your immune system, impairs your decision-making, decreases your ability to learn new skills, and makes you foggy and prone to mistakes. Promote quality sleep by establishing a bedtime routine, avoiding caffeine after noon, and going to bed at the same time every night.

Ditching your nightly Netflix routine and opting for earlier mornings instead can add hours of productivity to your day. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Early to bed, and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

2) Prepare the night before

Preparing for your day the night before is another way to give you a successful start. Who wants to wake up to a cluttered space or a cluttered mind?

Before bed, pick up the house, set out an outfit for tomorrow, and maybe even get your coffee pot ready. Anything you can do to streamline your morning will help contribute to a clear mind when you wake up.

Prepare yourself for your day by making a list the day before. What do you need to get done today? Have it all written down and ready to go. When you sit down to work, you can jump right in instead of taking the time to decide what needs to be accomplished first.

3) Eat a healthy breakfast

Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism, helps you focus, and regulates your blood sugar. Start the day by giving your body the vitamins and nutrients it needs to work hard all day.

Ditch the sugar cereals and donuts, and find something to eat that will fuel your body to tackle the day ahead. Some healthy options include fruit, oatmeal, whole-grain toast, avocado, granola, Greek yogurt, or eggs.

4) Exercise

If you’ve established an early wake time, you’ll have time in the morning to get some exercise before the day begins. Exercise boosts energy, productivity, motivation, and physical and mental stamina. It also increases the brain’s dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels, which all affect focus and attention. It also reduces stress and anxiety and improves sleep, which contributes to helping your brain function and think better during the day.

Getting a half hour of aerobic exercise before work will greatly contribute to not only your daily focus, but your overall health. If that seems daunting, start with just a 10-minute walk, and gradually build up from there.
