Is your website mobile-friendly? Over 80% of the world now owns a smartphone, and that number is increasing all the time. This means that if you want to have a successful website, it’s critical that your site is optimized for mobile. In fact, there are numerous reasons why your website must be mobile-friendly.

How many people have a smartphone?

Most of the world is now very familiar with smartphones. According to Statista, “The number of smartphone subscriptions worldwide today surpasses six billion and is forecast to further grow by several hundred million in the next few years.”

Check out this graph from Statista to see how this number continues to increase year after year. And it’s only expected to continue to increasing!

As the number of smartphone users continues to increase, it will become more and more important to ensure that your site is optimized for mobile. Here are a few reasons why mobile-friendliness matters.

Optimizing for mobile will result in higher pageviews and a lower bounce rate

Visitors will shy away from a website that is hard to read or loads slowly on a smartphone. When this happens, you’ll find that people aren’t staying on your page for very long. They also won’t be clicking around as much to other pages on your site. Making sure that your site is easy to use and loads well on mobile helps ensure that visitors will spend the maximum amount of time on your site rather than clicking away in frustration.

Mobile optimization greatly improves SEO

SEO (search engine optimization) is often the main way that people find your website. The time you spend working on SEO will reap incredible benefits that will only increase as time goes on.

As of March 2021, Google is actually using mobile-first indexing. This means that the mobile version of a website is the predominant way that Google indexes and ranks sites. In the past, the desktop version was used. However, as more people are switching over to using smartphones more often, Google has decided to prioritize mobile-indexing.

This means that it’s very important to consider mobile-friendliness if you want your site to rank on Google. Think about it: how often do you visit the second or third page of search results when looking for information online? Most people rarely do. Therefore, you’ll want to make every effort to ensure that you can rank on Google’s first page.

Consumers often use mobile devices before making a purchase

Our mobile devices are practically always in our pockets or close by. For this reason, mobile devices are what consumers usually use to seek information or reviews on a product right before making a purchase. If a buyer is on-the-go or at a store and wants information right away, you’d better believe they’ll be reaching for their mobile device. Whether someone is about to buy your product and or is just looking to learn more as they wait at the doctor’s office, you’ll want your information to be easily accessible no matter what.

Optimizing for mobile helps you be competitive

If you want to stay neck-to-neck with your competitors, make sure you optimize for mobile! Your top competitors have already made their website mobile-friendly. Don’t lose your chance at winning customers over simply because they don’t want to utilize your site.

You’ll be easier to contact

As we previously discussed, our mobile devices are nearly always with us! When a potential customer wants to contact you, they need to be able to get your information right away. Keep your site mobile-friendly so that customers can pull up your information the moment they think of you—with or without a desktop computer. If you have a physical location, Google Business another important tool for this. Read more about how to use Google Business here.
