Top SEO tips from an industry expert

We recently sat down for an interview with Lifedge’s very own SEO expert to hear his top SEO tips. Joe Grech has spent 40+ years in the advertising and marketing industry, including many years working with reputable papers such as The Detroit Free Press and The Ann Arbor News. In recent years, he has poured his time into becoming an SEO expert. He’s become a pro at optimizing websites to perform higher in search results and rankings, and has helped dozens of companies improve their ranking results. It was such a treat to sit down and hear some of his best tips, and we want you to have the opportunity to listen in!

“What are the most important things that any company can do to improve SEO?”

Joe’s answer: One of the most important things that any business should be thinking about is keywords. Keywords are what allow internet searchers to actually find your brand. Start by identifying what your brand is all about. Who are you? What do you do? What words are associated with your brand? Next, put yourself in the customer’s shoes. Think about what words or terms they would use to search you out. Then, integrate those keywords into your site.

On a similar note, realize that you can’t be all things to all people. It’s tempting to want to define your brand with a keyword list as long as your arm, but this just isn’t effective. Choose the top 1-3 things you do, and focus in on those. Those are the keywords you should be honing in on.

“What are your favorite SEO tools?”

Joe’s answer: Screaming Frog SEO is a helpful tool that comes out of England. Screaming Frog allows you to enter your URL, and gives you tons of useful information about your site.

Builtwith is another great tool that can help out with improving SEO on the back end of your site.

Both of these tools have free versions, and both can be used by beginners. However, they may be a bit overwhelming for those who don’t have much SEO knowledge.

“What are your thoughts on paid SEO? Is it helpful?”

Joe’s answer: Pay-per-click campaigns have pros and cons. The biggest pro is that they allow you to get traffic immediately. The problem is that as soon as you stop, the traffic goes away.

Organic traffic is quality traffic. You want traffic that will stay on your site, and people who have true interest in what you’re offering.

Rather than spending your investment dollars on pay-per-click, try putting half the amount into SEO. Instead of getting pay-per-click’s short-term, lower-quality results, you’ll experience evergreen, ongoing results and a higher-quality audience.
