Marketing Tips for Beginners: 7 Things I Wish I’d Known When I First Started in Marketing
Reading Time: ( Word Count: )
These marketing tips for beginners get into the real nitty-gritty of marketing.

I sat down with LIfedge’s CEO Oscar and asked him, “What do you wish you’d known when you first started in marketing?”

Here’s what he said!

Oscar Quesada has been in marketing since he was just 18 years old. A little over 6 years ago now, he got to fulfill his dream of starting his own marketing company, Lifedge.

With more than a decade of marketing experience under his belt, he’s got some good advice for beginners!

Below are Oscar’s “7 Things I Wish I’d Known When I First Started in Marketing.” Enjoy!

Marketing tips for beginners

“I wish I’d known…”

1. How important your messaging is

Oscar didn’t discover the StoryBrand marketing framework until he had already been working in marketing for years.

In 2017, a friend gave him Donald Miller’s book Building a StoryBrand, which opened up a whole new way of looking at marketing.

4 years ago, Oscar became a StoryBrand certified guide and now Lifedge uses the StoryBrand marketing framework with every client we serve.

Why was StoryBrand such a huge deal for Oscar? It totally changed the way he thought about messaging!

Good messaging focuses on the client and the problem to fix instead of on yourself and what you offer.

In the story you’re trying to tell, your customer needs to be the hero, not you.

2. Why people buy

Closely related to messaging, understanding the psychology of why people buy is crucial for successful marketing.

People buy because you’re solving a problem for them.

That’s why good marketing has to address the pain point that people who would benefit from your product are experiencing.

3. SEO is a big deal

It’s never too early to work on your SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

SEO is an essential part of a good marketing plan, so ignoring it will only hurt you in the long run. The sooner you learn your way around SEO, the better!

4. Lead generators are extremely important

Lead generators are far from an optional marketing tool – they’re a direct line to your revenue!

A good lead generator helps your leads take that crucial next step toward committing to your business.

5. You should have a business blog

No matter what your business specializes in, business blogging is for you!

Share about your company, what you believe, and what you offer on your blog. A business blog is not only a valuable resource for your clients, but it also attracts leads to your website by offering helpful information directly from the experts.

6. Marketing is a process, not a formula

What does this mean? There’s always going to be an experimental element to marketing. You implement your best plan, but it doesn’t always work.

This can be a really tough lesson to learn as a beginner in marketing, but it’s important to understand.

There is no exact marketing formula that will create leads and increase sales every time. Rather, marketing is a process that you have to adjust and tweak as you go.

You have to move forward with what works and cut out what doesn’t.

That’s why it is so important to build partnerships with your clients and give them accurate expectations. No empty promises!

7. I wish I’d known how hard it would be

Oscar: “When I first started out in marketing, I thought it would be simple. But it just kept needing more and more.”

Photos, videos, copy, SEO, blogging, email campaigns, social media, lead generators, website traffic, sales funnels – the list goes on and on.

Good marketing can’t just look nice, it has to actually work.

That’s why we do what we do at Lifedge. We create websites that look good, but we also drive traffic and help you convert leads into sales.
